When do I Need a Building Permit?

Our community’s building permits are issued by the Planning and Development Department of the City of Phoenix, which is located downtown across the street from the Municipal Courthouse at 200 W. Washington. They also have an online site where you can get lots of information and you can even request a permit from there.

But it’s not always easy to determine when you need a permit and when you don’t. Fortunately the City has a lot of information available online to help owners navigate through the process. Here’s a link to a brochure called Owners Guide to Residential Permits that explains why and when permits are required. Some work is exempt from permits and the brochure gives a partial list, but the brochure also gives the phone numbers where you can get your questions answered.

I have used the permit system and the people at PDD have always been patient, friendly and helpful as they helped me through the process.

As you consider your next home project you may want to visit the City’s site to make sure you’re protecting your investment and don’t end up with a lot of unnecessary and costly rework.
